FAQ's

CAN I USE THE MIDI LAB?
The MIDI Lab is open and available for all students, staff and faculty of VanderCook. However, if a class is in session in the Lab, we ask that you respect that class and instructor and NOT disturb them.

WHAT DO I USE TO PLAY MUSIC?
All the MIDI Lab Computers have iTunes. iTunes is the equivalent to the Windows Media Player. All music files can automatically open up using iTunes.

DO I REALLY NEED TO SAVE EVERYTHING?
Yes. The MIDI Lab computers are shutdown every night. If you did not save your work, you will lose it. The Deepfreeze will empty the trash and clear the desktop of everything but the Hard Drive Icon.

HOW DO I LOAD MY FLASH DRIVE CORRECTLY?
USB Ports are located on the back of the keyboard and monitor. We ask that you use the keyboard, but in the even that it proves to be a "Low Power Supply", feel free to use the back of the monitor. However, you shouldn't have to unplug anything. If you do, please remember to plug it back in.

I CAN'T FIND THE PROGRAM I NEED. WHERE IS IT?
All the computers in the MIDI Lab and the Library are equipped with everything you may need to fulfill class assignments. The Icons should all be on the Dock. If they are not, please notify the MIDI Lab Worker via email: msartori@vandercook.edu. On the computer desktop there is a hard drive Icon with a Polar bear on it. This is the Macintosh Hard Drive where all the applications are located. In the event that you cannot find the program/application you need, click on the hard drive and open APPLICATIONS. This will show you all the applications available to the student. Open the one you need and close the window. Please do not drag files from this folder to the desktop.

HOW DO I DOWNLOAD MY FILE/FOLDERS CORRECTLY?
To download attachments from your email on to the computer you are working on, hold down the OPTION key and clicking on the hyperlink. If it opens up some side tabs, click where it says DOWNLOAD LINKED FILE TO DESKTOP. This will download your file/folder safely.

THE COMPUTER IS ASKING FOR UPDATES, SHOULD I CLICK "OK"?
NO. The only people with the authority to update the MIDI Lab computers will do so on a bi-weekly basis. Click on "QUIT".

HOW DO I TAKE OUT THE FLASH DRIVE CORRECTLY?
There are a few ways to take out your Flash Drive. You can Click and Drag the Flash Drive Icon to the trash or -if it is open- click on the eject button on the top left corner. If a If the message comes up that the Flash Drive cannot be safely removed, wait. Do not pull it out as you may lose your work. After about 30 seconds, try again and it should eject. The Flash Drive will act this way if you had just saved something to the drive. This precaution serves as a safety mechanism.

Vandercook College of Music’s Computer Laboratory (commonly referred to as MIDI Lab) is available for student use during regular business hours. Any changes in the hours shall be clearly posted outside the lab. There are fifteen workstations that each contain an iMac and a MIDI controller keyboard. Each computer is loaded with productivity application software (Microsoft Office, AppleWorks, Safari, Firefox), MIDI and audio programs for music (Sibelius, Finale) and multimedia development programs (QuickTime Pro, GarageBand, iLife, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash).

Some computers, which are available in classrooms and practice studios should be used only to practice with SmartMusic software. They should not be used for any other purposes.
